All it takes is a simple change in your every day life to make the world a cleaner place. Many people have hesitated to jump on the "Going Green" bandwagon, mostly because they don't want to change their livestyle. Well here is your chance to learn how you can "Go Green" by adopting a few simple tasks.
Thanks to the Worldwatch Institute, here are 10 easy ways that you can "Go Green" and "Save Green" at the same time.
- Save Energy to Save Money - Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs. Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out. While summer time is still here, use a drying rack or clothesline to dry clothes to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying.
- Save Water to Save Money - Take shorter showers to reduce water use which will lower your water and heating bills too. Installing a low-flow showerhead will reduce water use and installing a faucet aerator will conserve heat and water while keeping water pressure high.
- Less Gas = More Money (and better health) - If possible, walk or bike to work. This will save on gas and parking costs while improving your health.
- Eat Smart - If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week to your diet. Meat costs a lot at the store and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
- Skip the Bottled Water - Rather than buying cases of bottled water which can be expensive and generates large amounts of container waste, use a water filter to purify your tap water.
- Think Before You Buy - Do your research and shop around before making a big, expensive purchase. Shop for sale items or gently used secondhand products to cut the cost.
- Borrow Instead of Buying - Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies to save money. You could also share power tools and other appliances with neighbors rather than purchasing your own.
- Buy Smart - Buying in bulk will save money and packaging. Investing in high-quality, long-lasting products will leave you happy in the long run when you don't have to replace items as frequently.
- Keep Electronics Out of the Trash - Keep your cell phones, computers and other electronics as long as possible. When the time comes, donate or recycle them responsibly.
- Make Your Own Cleaning Supplies - You can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them with a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon and soap.
